first iPhone worm hits jailbroken units

November 9, 2009 antenna1 Leave a comment

the worm is playful, not harmful but a sure hit for its developer, ikex. all it does is put up rick astley’s photo as a wallpaper on the iphone. but that is a consolation for now as this can mean the start of more things to come.

i think the age old question is it wise to have you iphone jailbroken has been answered today.

First-known iPhone worm ‘Rickrolls’ jailbroken Apple handsets

The iPhone’s first worm — a playful, wallpaper-changing prank that only affects jailbroken phones — could be a sign of more dangerous things to come.

A hacker who identifies himself as “ikex” created the worm, which changes the user’s wallpaper to a picture of 1980s pop star Rick Astley, who sang the 1987 hit “Never Gonna Give You Up.” The software includes the message: “ikee is never gonna give you up.”

The term jailbreaking refers to a hack that allows users to run software not approved by Apple on the iPhone. It can grant users the ability to install custom wallpapers and themes, enable tethering, or unlock the handset for use on a non-approved carrier.

The ikex worm is simply a prank known as “Rickrolling,” an Internet bait-and-switch meme when users expect to see a video on a certain topic, only to find themselves watching Astley’s cheesy 1987 music video. According to Forbes, the worm does nothing malicious.

“The world’s first iPhone worm is also hardly a true criminal exploit,” the report said. “Instead, it seems to be half warning, half prank. Ikee’s author, who identifies himself or herself as ‘ikex’ in the worm’s source code, also wrote in the code that “People are stupid, and this is to prove it so,” adding that users should read their phones’ manuals.”

For now, the worm is said to be spreading among jailbroken iPhones in Australia. It affects only users who did not change their default SSH password, which allows file transfers between phones.

“It’s not that hard, guys,” ikex wrote in the source code. “But hey who cares its only your bank details at stake.”

noynoy aquino’s “hindi ka nag-iisa” tv ad – it works because it speaks of most of us

November 1, 2009 antenna1 2 comments

noynoy aquino di ka nag-iisa tv ad

the lyrics of the song says it all:

Nang bawa’t mamamayan
pagmamahal natin sa bayan
‘wag na nating itago, ‘di tayo susuko

the ad shows a long list of celebrities who have not been  previously seen coming together for any cause. more importantly, these are celebrities who we did not expect and certainly did not even imagine would come out to appear for a tv ad for the election of a president.

seeing them and all of them in one ad struck a chord in our hearts as many of us felt the same way – for the first time we are coming out of our shell to support a presidential candidate.

one more reason to support the Reproductive Health (RH) Bill 5043 – environmental woes blamed on huge philippine population

October 25, 2009 antenna1 1 comment

how many times have we heard philippine government officials say “we do not have the budget” to explain its inability to provide for the population, both basic, medium term to critical services? we must have heard that thousands of times over many years across all types of services and problems.

the country is poor. it has scant resources. that is not being helped by the fact that the country’s population growth has been on a high clip, too fast versus the amount of funds the country can generate to provide for services.

that is related to the point of this article. lets face it – you just can’t keep placing more and more people on the same piece of land and expect nothing bad or nothing wrong will happen. the land can take only so much. couple that with scant resources and this is what we get.

Environmental woes blamed on RP’s huge population

By Michelle Remo
Philippine Daily Inquirer
First Posted 06:33:00 10/24/2009

MANILA, Philippines — An economist from the University of the Philippines has tagged the country’s robustly growing population as one of the factors that worsen environment-related problems.

Ernesto Pernia, former chief economist for the Philippines at the Asian Development Bank, said the environment problems that recently led to hundreds of casualties would not have been as worse had the country’s population been contained.

“Nobody has mentioned the population issue as one of the factors contributing to the country’s environmental problems. The capacity of the country’s ecology is already stretched to the limit,” Pernia told the Inquirer in an interview.

He said the country’s huge population, estimated at around 92 million, was one reason for overcrowding in the urban areas. In turn, overcrowding had lead to difficulty in managing wastes.

“The consequence of unabated migration to urban areas is haphazard human settlement. Too many people are staying in areas that should not be a place for settlement, like riverbanks, bridge waterways, and esteros (urban waterways)” Pernia said.

Climate change, caused by carbon emissions mostly from industrialized nations, was considered a major culprit for the heavy rains that led to hundreds of deaths in Metro Manila and northern provinces. However, Pernia said, factors that were within the Philippines’ control also worsened the impact of the heavy rains and the massive flooding they caused.

Pernia said population growth, together with weak urban planning, degradation of forests, poor disaster-preparedness and weather forecasting systems, made the environmental problem worse.

The country’s population growth rate is currently estimated at 2.1 percent, faster than the latest economic growth recorded at 1.5 percent in the first half of the year.

Pernia said that with the country’s population already nearing 100 million, a zero population growth rate would be ideal.

According to Pernia, the government has been trumpeting the country’s economic growth and its capacity to avoid recession but what should be of graver concern is the declining per capita income growth.

Per capita income is the total income of the economy, usually measured in terms of gross domestic product [GDP], divided by the country’s population. It basically measures the share of each individual to the country’s income.

The fact that population growth was already faster than the GDP growth meant that per capital growth had already been declining, Pernia said. This placed the Philippines worse off than countries who had fallen into recession, but whose population growth was slower than the decline in their GDPs.

upgrading to windows 7 is upgrading the windows and microsoft brands

October 23, 2009 antenna1 Leave a comment

the tech world and tech users should be giddy today – microsoft’s windows 7 is finally out in the market. or at least that is what microsoft should be hoping for. giddy is a feeling the tech world and tech users did not feel with microsoft’s most recent launch with microsoft vista. it was more about hatred, anger and disappointment. vista was a dismal product failure for microsoft. it was so bad that the venerable microsoft and windows brands were tarnished. with windows 7, microsoft aims to re-build both brands.

aside from the above, windows 7’s goals for itself is to convert the multitude of windows xp users, esteimated at around 70% of all windows users. xp users did not budge with most of them rejecting to move to vista wholesale due to the long list of problems and angry words said on vista.  it will be a tough sell for microsoft.

the move to vista from xp is not easy. tech articles have said it will not be a walk in the park, it will need a complete install plus there might be the problem of the computer not being able to take windows 7. what they are saying is that there will be xp users will not be able to upgrade to windows 7 unless they buy new computers.

this article is also saying if you are a vista user, it might not be worth moving to windows 7 as the improvement is only incremental.

a new product, windows 7 trying to reseurrect a much maligned and failed product in vista, this whole process is one for matketing 101. we will be watching.

Five Reasons to Upgrade to Windows 7

Today is the day. The curtain has been raised and the confetti has fallen. Windows 7 is here. After the problems with the launch of Windows Vista– both real and perceived– many users are cautious about jumping on Windows 7 too quickly.

Windows 7 offers little more than incremental improvements and cosmetic enhancements over Windows Vista, and Windows Vista users may be wise to simply hold off until its time for a new PC. But the majority of users are still using Windows XP and even Vista users have reason to embrace Windows 7. Let’s look at 5 reasons why you should make the switch to Windows 7 today.

1. Vista haters. Whether you are one of the nearly 19 percent of consumers who are actually running Windows Vista and don’t like it, or part of the larger crowd of those who hate Windows Vista purely based on anecdotal stories and ‘I’m a Mac’ ads from Apple, Windows 7 is not Windows Vista.

The two most common complaints about Windows Vista are poor device driver support and annoyance over the UAC (user account control) pop-up alerts. Windows 7 has vastly superior device support, and Microsoft has modified the functionality of UAC to provide the user with more control over the alert prompts.

2. XP diehards. Security is arguably the best reason for a Windows XP user to make the switch. A lot has changed since the Clinton-era. Windows 7 has UAC, ASLR (address space layout randomization), and DEP (data execution prevention) in addition to improved operating system kernel protection. Certain versions of Windows 7 also include BitLocker and BitLocker-to-Go encryption.

There are also a number of improvements in the user interface that make it simpler and more intuitive to work with the operating system. The Windows Action Center, improved data backup, Blu-ray disc support, and jump lists stand out as good reasons to make the switch.

ateneo blue eagles win, UAAP back-to-back champions, see you at the bonfire on saturday!

October 9, 2009 antenna1 1 comment

we had no doubt the ateneo blue eagles will win back-to-back championships in the UAAP. it is a very disciplined team with fully set plays behind solid coaching and the league’s deepest bench. in many ways this year’s team is a dream team of any coach. it seem to have a limitless number of players that the coach can call to do a job or fill in a missing one.

that showed in every game they played. it showed clearly during the championship games, specially in the last one. ateneo is know to come in strong at the start, has the ability to maintain it and has the confidence and poise to handle problems.

we congratulate the ateneo blue eagles. the bonfire is on saturday, see you there.

Eagles complete back-to-back title romp

MANILA, Philippines – Defense and deadly focus sparked a second straight title for the Blue Eagles that completed a second consecutive championship double for Ateneo in the UAAP basketball tournament at the Araneta Coliseum.

Aggressive on both ends of the court, the Blue Eagles pulled away in the second quarter and roared to a 71-58 rout of the University of the East Warriors in the finale of the best-of-three title series before a 19,000-strong crowd.

Rabeh Al-Hussaini, who scattered 28 points in Ateneo’s 78-71 Game 1 win, came out dominating Game 3 with 21 points and 14 rebounds to lead this batch of Blue Eagles in replicating Ateneo’s first back-to-back title romp in 1987 and 1988.

“We came out hungry right from the very start, we were on attack mode right from the very start,” said coach Norman Black.

The Eagles, blasted by the Warriors to smithereens in Game 2, 88-68, returned the compliment this time with Jai Reyes and Ryan Buenafe joining forces with Al-Hussaini in Ateneo’s second-half binge.

“The focus was much better,” said Black after the Eagles bagged their fifth overall crown since joining the league in 1978. “We played defense, something we didn’t do in Game 2.”

PMA suspends hayden kho on the katrina halili-hayden kho sex scandal – what for?

September 4, 2009 antenna1 1 comment

i don’t understand why the Philippine Medical Association suspended hayden kho. the reason is “conduct offensive to the profession”.

what was the conduct offensive to the profession? hayden kho had sex and videotaped it. he did that as a human being. he may have an unusual way of enjoy sex, video taping it, but that does not make it offensive. it’s a personal preference.

hayden kho did not have sex and most specially did not video tape it as an act of his prodession as a doctor nor did he use his profession to lure the other woman to have sex with him and to video tape it.

we are scandalized by what happened because the video recording was made public and senator revilla made a big deal of it. it was like porn released to the general public. but the release of the video recording was not done by dr. kho, someone else did it.

the possible fault of hayden kho was the charge that the woman in the video, katrina halili did not know their sex act was being recorded and no permission was sought from her to record it.

that fault has nothing to do with the practice of dr. kho’s medical profession. it is a legal matter but certainly not a matter for the  PMA. again, the alleged deception occurred not because of kho’s abuse or use of his medical profession.

kho did not tarnish the medical profession, he only tarnished his personal reputation. we now know as a human being kho is a jerk.

Docs’ group suspends Hayden Kho
By Allison Lopez
Philippine Daily Inquirer
First Posted 23:07:00 09/03/2009

MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine Medical Association (PMA) has suspended Dr. Hayden Kho Jr. for a year for “conduct offensive to the profession,” his lawyer, Lorna Kapunan, told the Philippine Daily Inquirer Thursday.

“We were called to a hearing on September 2 by the PMA ethics committee to inform us of their decision to suspend my client’s membership for one year,” she later elaborated in a text message to the Inquirer.

Kapunan added, “My client respects the decision.”

This was echoed by Kho himself who said he would not contest PMA’s decision.

“I respect their decision … I’m happy with whatever is given to me. I’m actually ready for anything,” he said.

Kho was with Kapunan at the launching of the White Ribbon Day campaign. He even had a white ribbon pinned on his shirt.

The PMA started investigating Kho after actress Katrina Halili asked the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) to revoke Kho’s license and ban him from practicing medicine, saying he was a disgrace to the medical profession.

senator juan ponce enrile

senator enrile was fuming mad  the other day. he said his cellphone’s load disappeared without him using any of it. and that is a crime of stealing.

we agree with senator enrile. it is also the same complaint we have been making and pouring complaints to cell phone company’s customer service call centers.
but let’s be honest here, senator enrile did tell a lie. perhaps done out of passion? we love enrile just the same for telling a lie. we forgive him for it.

ateneo implements penny changes at the AGS parking lot, the dangers remain

an ateneo mom sent us by email pictures of the changes that have been done and are being currently done at the ateneo parking lot at the grade school campus. the ateneo mom says her son took the pictures, a photo hobyist who studies at the ateneo high school. we like to thank the ateneo mom and her high school son for sending us the pictures.

these are pictures of 3 areas – the mcbo parking area for school buses, the parking lot by the side of the irwin theater and the main area where amiel was killed to death in a traffic car accident.

even if you add up all three – they are all penny improvements which we do not think amount to adding or improving safety in that parking lot. it does not cost a lot, that is obvious but neither does it amount to anything on improving safety in the AGS parking lot.

we understand and agree with the improvements at the parking area near mcbo. ateneo placed white cement line dividers to guide vehicles on how to park properly in that area. that is a good improvement.

that change will help improve safety for parked cars and will optimize use of space. it will also eliminate fights that sometimes erupts between drivers when vehicles are not parked improperly. however, from what we remember that area is mostly used by school buses. we are not sure how much that kind of change will enhance safety in that parking area. also, what about the other parking areas in the campus, those at beside the football fields?

mcbo_parking area AGS

parking area near mcbo

the other area that has been changed somewhat is the parking area beside the irwin theater. the picture shows workings digging holes on that area. the ateneo mom who sent us the picture wrote that she thinks they will do what has been done to the main parking area where amiel died – place poles and ropes along the lane nearest to the curb. it’s hard to tell what it is for from the picture. based on the picture, it looks like they just started that this week.

irwin theater parking lot

parking area in front of irwin theater

the change at the main parking area where amiel died is also minimal. the only change we see there is that the lane nearest to the curb now has a rope running across the parking lot.

we do not know exactly what that is for, but the inner single lane can fit one car. it is possible they will allow cars to pass through that to probably pick up students who wait at that curbside. if we are correct about this, we predict humongous traffic on that lane as cars cannot exit that roped area, they need to wait for the cars in front of them to move and get out of the lane.

more importantly, the parking situation that got amiel killed continue to be there. there are no changes done to that 4 to 5 lane roadway where cars used to park and wait for students, exactly the same situation that got amiel killed on the same spot.

this is a puzzle for us. well, actually all three changes to us is a big puzzle. given the astronomical tuition fees paid for by parents to ateneo and the gravity of the death of amiel in that parking lot, ateneo is implementing penny changes to that parking lot where amiel died.

we think with penny changes, the dangers that killed amiel last february still exist.

main parking area where amiel died

main parking area where amiel died

has ateneo not learned its lesson for amiel’s death? is ateneo that calous to ignore and be deaf and insensitive to the sentiments of parents who want major changes in that parking lot?

top questions to ask on the new AGS traffic scheme

May 7, 2009 antenna1 6 comments

with little, major or no change, ateneo sooner or later will need to talk to the parents about the new traffic scheme that they will implement next school year. when that happens, these are the important questions they need to ask ateneo (in no particular order):

  • what caused the tragic accident that killed grade 4 boy amiel alcantara?
  • how does the new traffic scheme prevent, minimize or remove what caused the tragic death of amiel?
  • did the school consult professionals or experts on safety and traffic management? who are they? their credentials?
  • did these professionals or experts design the new traffic scheme? how much involvement did they have in its development?
  • how many traffic schemes were considered? why was this chosen? if only one was considered, why so?
  • what does the school plan to do with amiel’s shrine?
  • if the new traffic scheme has little changes from current, why is that so? how will the new traffic scheme improve safety in school when very little changes have been done?
  • why is the school doing very little structural changes or additions to the parking lot? it stands to reason that physical barriers and infrastructure changes/addition will control traffic and improve safety significantly, why are there few or little changes?
  • if few/minor changes and no/very little infrastructure changes/additions, it means the school did not want to spend for these things. is this true?
  • what are the school’s plans for it’s security guards – they are too few and ill-trained for the task of improving safety and preventing traffic accidents.
  • does the school plan to have its own ambulance? amiel was brought to the hospital through the kindness of another ateneo mom, that should not happen again.
  • does the school have an emergency response plan/program? the amiel accident showed it did  not have one.

everyone is welcome to add to this list, will post it here.

balloons-released

it is important to ask the tough questions as this concerns the safety of our sons at the ateneo parking lot. what happened to amiel was a very painful experience for all of us parents and our sons, the school needs to learn it’s lesson and seriously change things for the better at the parking lot.  just to remind everyone that this is no small matter, the changes that they will do to the new traffic scheme will mean the safety or no safety of our sons at thee parking lot.

microsoft’s new tv ad : it concedes it ain’t cool and it’s cheap – ewww! too much information?

March 27, 2009 antenna1 Leave a comment

there is a new microsoft tv ad. it continues the “i’m a pc” ad line  that microsoft copied from the successful apple/mac ads and positions microsoft/windows/pc on a good value poistioning.

view this new tv ad here: http://the-wawam-file.blogspot.com/

Laptop Hunters $1000 – Lauren Gets an HP Pavilion
Laptop Hunters $1000 – Lauren Gets an HP Pavilion

so now we have microsoft/windows/pcs saying they are cheap and they are not cool. at minimum, that kind of positioning can be polarizing – some people will love it but some people will hate it. it’s always risky to release an ad that has the potential to polarize your target audience. the thinking is you release the best ad you can make and that usually entails you are 100% the ad is perfect. the risk you take in releasing polarizing ads is that the negative might eventually overpower the negative.

how much is the brilliant business model Apple App Store worth?

app_storedo you have $72,000.00 to spare? if you do you can own all the 25,000 applicati0ns sold at Apple’s App Store. yup, the apps are that cheap.

but that is not the big story yet. apple’s app store is a run-away business model success for apple. it has added profits to the company.

but that is not even the true worth of the app store – it is much more worth than its current revenues when it is able to able to satisfy apple customers.

on the amiel alcantara death — the alcantaras: to forgive torres? the torreses: our sympathies?

March 13, 2009 antenna1 3 comments

there are two questions that have been appearing in this blog in many other posts. i thought i would open this post so that we can collect all the responses here for a better appreciation of the points and a good discussion.

this blog is very lucky as almost everyone who post here are very decent and mature posters. the views expressed here are very good reads and contain gems and good insights. i understand the topic i am opening here can be controversial but i hope common sense and decency will prevail and we will get good reactions here.

these are two questions:

  1. The Alcantara Family Forgiving Theresa Torres. what do you think on that one? should there be forgiveness now? if the alcantaras have not done so – can you empathize with that? agree with it? understand it? is it easy to do? can you blame them for not being able to forgive? when should they forgive? what is forgiveness? where do you find the strength to forgive someone who has caused the death of your son? what do you think?
  2. The Sympathy We Give To Theresa Torres. we all know theresa torres is the other party involved and was the cause of death of amiel. sometimes we forget, but we should remember torres is also a member of the ateneo community. she also has a son/s studying at the ateneo. in fact she has  a son who is in the same grade as amiel. torres is also suffering and in pain. the guilt of being the cause of death of a child  must be overwhelming and consuming.  and what about her son who is also in grade 4? think of the feelings, shame, horror, fear and anger the son must be feeling now. he has a mother who caused the death of someone in his own grade. how can he face his classmates? what sort of ill feelings does he have against his mother? point is the torres family is also suffering. where are you on this? your thoughts?

Blogs: Ateneo pupil hit by ‘texting’ driver

The 37-year-old mother who accidentally ran over and killed an Ateneo de Manila gradeschool pupil on Tuesday afternoon was allegedly “texting” moments before the tragedy.

Witnesses said Ma. Theresa Torres appeared to have dropped her mobile phone and was picking it up when she seemed to have mistakenly stepped on the accelerator of her Hi Ace van just as the victim, Julian Carlo Miguel “Amiel” Alcantara, was passing in front of her.

“Torres asked her driver to get her own son and so she was seated on the driver side, buckled up. Eyewitnesses saw her texting with her cell phone. Then people saw her unbuckle her seat belt and she stooped down to get something on the floor of the van, presumably she dropped her cell phone and bent down to get it from the floor,” one witness said. “It was in that position that led her to mistakenly step on the gas accelerator rather than the brakes,” the witness added.

an ateneo mom’s experience on car-related accidents inside the ateneo campus

March 4, 2009 antenna1 3 comments
this was sent by email. we choose to keep her anonymous for privacy. this is a true story.
——–

Having three boys in Ateneo GS gave me sleepless nights after the tragic incident.  My youngest (Grade 2) son was hit by a private car inside the Ateneo parking ground October of last year.

I was out of the country that time and I was informed only the night when I arrived home (about a day after it happened).

The driver was able to hit the break on time. According to our Yaya they brought my son to the infirmary and only red marks made by the bumper was seen.

As a Mom, I took him to a physician to be sure that there are no internal injuries. Thank God , there was none.

I went to Security to check what they had done to prevent it from happening again. I became so frustrated that time because of three reasons

1) The driver that hit my 8 year old son entered a no entry zone. This is where students run towards their respective school buses.

2) No one asked about my son’s condition after the incident, even if an incident report  was made.

3) I informed them about my opinion, that a rope and a light metal stand could not prevent the violators from removing it and carelessly pass where ever they please. And this system was continued and followed as if nothing had happened.

The children are only in Grade School. The age right after they stopped drinking from their feeding bottles. Security should be very visible to help and guide the kids,  to protect them in our absence.

All of us are affected by the loss of Amiel one way or the other.

I remembered the feeling of pain when it happened to my son last October. I just guess that for Amiel’s family, it is about a thousand times heavier than what I felt.

Until now I think about it and pray everyday for Amiel. This time not just another piece of incident report, I hope they do something and act on it soon.
