Pushcart educator named CNN Hero of the Year

(CNN) — Efren Peñaflorida, who started a “pushcart classroom” in the Philippines to bring education to poor children as an alternative to gang membership, has been named the 2009 CNN Hero of the Year.

CNN’s Anderson Cooper revealed Peñaflorida’s selection at the conclusion of the third-annual “CNN Heroes: An All-Star Tribute” at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood on Saturday night.

The gala event, taped before an audience of 3,000 at the Kodak Theatre, premieres on Thanksgiving, November 26, at 9 p.m. ET/PT on the global networks of CNN.

The broadcast, which honors the top 10 CNN Heroes of 2009, features performances by Grammy Award-winning artist Carrie Underwood, R&B crooner Maxwell and British pop sensation Leona Lewis.

Peñaflorida, who will receive $100,000 to continue his work with the Dynamic Teen Company, was selected after seven weeks of online voting at CNN.com. More than 2.75 million votes were cast.

“Our planet is filled with heroes, young and old, rich and poor, man, woman of different colors, shapes and sizes. We are one great tapestry,” Peñaflorida said upon accepting the honor. “Each person has a hidden hero within, you just have to look inside you and search it in your heart, and be the hero to the next one in need.

“So to each and every person inside in this theater and for those who are watching at home, the hero in you is waiting to be unleashed. Serve, serve well, serve others above yourself and be happy to serve. As I always tell to my co-volunteers … you are the change that you dream as I am the change that I dream and collectively we are the change that this world needs to be.”

The top 10 CNN Heroes, chosen by a blue-ribbon panel from an initial pool of more than 9,000 viewer nominations, were each honored with a documentary tribute and introduced by a celebrity presenter. Each of the top 10 Heroes receives $25,000.

“With the recognition they receive on our stage,” said Cooper, who hosted the tribute, “they’ll be able to help thousands and thousands of people. Through their efforts, lives will be changed and lives will be saved.”

Maxwell sang “Help Somebody” from his first album in eight years, ‘BLACKsummers’night.’

Lewis, a three-time Grammy nominee, performed “Happy,” from her second album, “Echo.”

All three performances echoed the spirit of the CNN Heroes campaign, which salutes everyday people whose extraordinary accomplishments are making a difference in their communities and beyond.

Mocha spotted kissing Krista Ranillo!

Controversial singer Mocha who made the news when photos of her kissing fellow Mocha Girl Hershey were published in a tabloid without her knowledge may soon be making the headlines again after she was spotted kissing fellow Maxim Magazine columnist Krista Ranillo. This took place as Mocha, Maxim’s cover girl for the month of April, was doing a series of interviews for the men’s magazine last March 31.

Mocha was just finishing an interview when Krista arrived at the Maxim offices to do some paper work. It was the first time that the two had met and they hit it off right away with Krista even signing a copy of her March Maxim cover and Mocha doing the same.

After talking about their respective columns, Mocha, who admits she is bisexual, was overheard telling Krista, “Mag-kiss tayo,” at one point. Krista answered with a laugh and soon the two went off with Mocha’s manager and some of the Maxim staff. The two went to a secluded spot where they proceeded to kiss for several seconds while cameras were trained on them.

Most of the people who witnessed the scene were shocked since Krista, who had a rather conservative image before she became Maxim’s sex and relationship columnist, was unexpectedly open to kissing another woman, even giggling about it afterwards. The staff admitted that it was an impromptu meeting. Onlookers revealed that it was a “very hot encounter” and that both women were really into it.

Krista later revealed that it was her first time to kiss a girl, since the Pieta star is straight and has a long time boyfriend. Mocha admitted that although she was surprised Krista agreed to the kiss, she’s proud that she was Krista’s first. Mocha even laughingly said, “She’s a good kisser!”

MANILA – Actress Krista Ranillo (born Cristalle Lauren Tupaz Ranillo) is the talk of the town these days because she is being linked to Filipino boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao.

But very little is known of the 24-year-old sexy starlet, who has graced the covers of numerous men’s magazines and starred in racy independent films.

She earned a degree in Interdisciplinary Studies with tracks in Communication Arts and Psychology in 2007, and was reported to be a consistent Dean’s Lister.

In her school yearbook, Aegis ‘07, a write-up describes her thus: “Everyone beware of Krista Ranillo! With her angelic face, sweet smile, gorgeous body, and brains to die for, she seems heaven-sent.”

“This religious, charming, talented artista/model/everything-else princess seems too good to be true,” the write-up states, with glowing reviews of her loyalty and warmth as a friend.

However, the writer notes that Ranillo also has a naughty side.

“But behind that innocent facade lies a mischievous little devil who can make you believe that you can only buy blue books in the States and and that you missed a very important quiz when you were absent,” it states.

Of her “wild side” the write-up goes: “When you’re with Krista, you’re sure to be laughing your head off with all her hilarious tricks and quick quips. It doesn’t matter what you do together, for she’s always ready to go along with anything spontaneously crazy.”

She is described as a responsible student who “finishes her papers early so she can spend the weekend with her friends” and was often described by peers as being aloof.

“Often one of the first to rally loudly for a free cut in class, Krista is actually quite a nerd!” the text states. “Though some may think she’s ‘mataray’ because she hardly hangs out in school, she’s actually sleeping at home!”

“Truly, Krista Artista is a walking contradiction. Angelic but wicked, funny but serious, silly but nerdy, social but anti-social, sweet but naughty, caring but mischevious,” the write-up says.

Already having the makings of a celebrity, Ranillo’s batchmate ends the write-up with: “Can I have your autograph?!”

‘Goodvertising’ top Subic ad talk

SUBIC BAY FREEPORT — By doing good, the advertising industry could thrive in the future, a top advertising executive in South Africa told delegates to the 21st Philippine Advertising Congress (PAC) here Thursday.

Mike Schalit, chief creative officer of Network BBDO South Africa, said the advertising industry should “turn away from cute, clever advertising designed to win awards but don’t do any good in the world.”

“What about the real problems of the world? Like homelessness. What can we do about that?” he asked.

this one caught my attention: “turn away from cute, clever advertising designed to win awards but don’t do any good in the world.”

cute and clever advertising are great, it’s the last part that i have problems with – “designed to win awards”. we got reminded of the “scam ads” that populate the philippine ad con awards that we had written about in 2008.

everybody in the philippine ad industry knows this. it’s the worst kept secret in the ad industry – the scam ads that win the Araw Awards (“araw” means day or sun, depending on the usage. in this award, it’s meant to mean the sun) in the ad competition during the Philippine Ad Congress. these scam ads do win the awards. on the day the scam ads win, is it an “araw ng parangal” (day of tribute) or is it an “araw ng lokohan” (day of scams)?

scam ads are one-shot ads where ad agencies develop creatives for the sole purpose of making the most creative ads to win awards. ad agencies usually look for very small clients, even those who normally can’t afford advertising and have not had an ad ever, and convince them to use their business in the ad. they air/publish the ad only once just to comply with the award criteria.

scam ads are not meant to build the business of the client as what advertising ought to do. in the first place, scam ads can never do that – it’s aired/printed only once and they’re too creative that only creative directors can understand and appreciate the ads. creative directors are usually the judges of ad competitions. scam ads are not tools for building business, they’re tools to boost the egos of creative directors who want to win awards.

no doubt, scam ads will once again win in the adcon. it is almost like an industry within an industry, a mafia like operation that ad agencies, creatives specifically run. all the effort just to win awards.

these efforts that creatives run in mafia like fashion does not do anything good to the ad industry, all it does is enhance the egoes of individual  creatives. it does not even build business for clients.

creatives do not do the same kind of quality work on a daily basis that they present to legitimate clients. this kind of  award winning work are just too difficult to do, to time consuming, very risky for them and offers no ego reward for them. it will be a miracle if we see these types in print or in tv for 10% of the work.

this is not a joke. this is an actual picture of the side of a small delivery van with the name of the company painted on its side. i am sure the company owners know what the company name sounds like.

is this none of our business? but manny pacquiao is a national celebrity, the greatest today – his life on and off the ring is public property. he is not only a national celebrity, he is global and that is why there is a video of manny and krista taken and posted in the internet when they went to the US tv show for manny’s guesting.

manny before this the alleged krista-manny affair was perfect for us. well, not really – he has problems with speaking in english but that we don’t mind, we still think he is perfect. aside from being a world-class champion boxer and making global boxing history, we think he is perfect with a beautiful wife, jinkee always behind him, a quirky but loveable mother and very cute and good looking kids. will manny still be perfect in our eyes after krista?

they are denying there is anything to it. but these pictures in baguio is something else and belies the denials. why would krista be with manny in baguio for his training? why not his wife? there are other questions - how come jinkee did not know about it? and why was she not in baguio? but that is beside the point for now.

we think they will eventually admit to it. there is just too much pictures going around to deny it.  we do not think there is any denying what it means that krista was in baguio with manny during his training.

what was manny thinking? it’s amazing how he can think bringing krista to baguio with him will not be found out. we have always thought manny is often times clueless about things. this one is just one of a string that confirms he is clueless.

this will get very ugly before it gets better. hold on to your seats!

MANILA – The alleged affair between Manny Pacquiao and Krista Ranillo continues to heat up.

Despite the denial and “no-comment” remark from both camps, pieces of evidence – photos and video – that purportedly prove the romance between the two have surfaced on the Internet.

A video of Pacquiao and a woman, believed to be Ranillo, leaving the “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” show in the United States has been posted on video-sharing Web site YouTube.

Pacquiao guested in the late-night talk show before his match with Miguel Cotto of Puerto Rico.

The footage has been posted by celebritynationVids that also wrote: “I caught boxing champion Manny ‘Pacman’ Pacquiao leaving the Jimmy Kimmel Live show. Manny didn’t bother to sign the autographs for about 70 fans who were there to show their support to him. He was with a woman who wasn’t his wife. So that’s probably why he didn’t stop!”

MANILA, Philippines—Boxing superstar Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao Wednesday brushed off rumors that his marriage was on the rocks amid persistent reports that he flew a starlet and her whole family to Las Vegas to watch him win a record seventh world title.

In an interview aired over ABS-CBN as he prepared to fly home to a hero’s welcome on Friday after taking Miguel Cotto’s World Boxing Organization welterweight title in Las Vegas, Pacquiao sidestepped the issue. Again.

Pacquiao, 30, instead admonished the local press to report his achievements in the ring, “not the private lives of people.” He added, “I hope they honor the achievements that I have won for my fellow Filipinos.”

The day before, the champion was just as evasive, telling another TV crew, “Why don’t we just enjoy this victory?”

The glow from Saturday’s one-sided contest has been tarnished by reports that while in the United States, Pacquiao stayed in a different hotel—apart from his wife, Jinkee, with whom he has three children. Jinkee has since been shown twice on television, in tears.

According to the reports, the champ paid for the air tickets and hotel accommodation of Filipino starlet Krista Ranillo and her family, who all watched the bout live, further fueling rumors of a romantic liaison.

On Nov. 13, Philippine Daily Inquirer sports columnist Beth Celis wrote that Pacquiao had “blushed like a schoolboy after his secret crush was revealed to the world.”

Celis said the champ was “caught by surprise” when asked pointedly about Ranillo: “Manny lifted his cell phone to hide his face. After he regained his composure, he replied, ‘No comment.’ Then he walked out.”

‘Crab mentality’

In Wednesday’s interview, Pacquiao said: “Let us avoid what I call our crab mentality. I am appealing to all of you to avoid that. Let us unite so we will all be happy.”

(He was drawing an analogy with Filipinos and crabs trapped in a vat. As one crab tries to claw its way out, others beneath it pull it back to their level.)

Pacquiao, who claimed a historic seventh world title in as many weight divisions with Sunday’s victory, is no stranger to controversy surrounding his private life. (He had earlier been forced to deny reports of a romantic involvement with actress Ara Mina.)

But neither is Krista. A few years ago, she was romantically linked to actor-filmmaker Michael de Mesa. Over the weekend, De Mesa’s ex-wife, actress Gina Alajar, posted on her Facebook account, “If I am Jinkee Pacquiao, I will not give up Manny … Krista Ranillo is not at all worth it!”

during the celebration mass at LA, video showed jinkee, pacquaio’s wife in tears. it was a coincidence that the officiating priest’s sermon was centered on husband-wife relationships. at the peace be with you part of the mass,  manny who was beside jinky extended his hand to give her a hug but she refused the hug. instead, jinkee hugged her friend who was beside her and manny’s walked to manny and hugged her son.

Krista Ranillo flatly denies Pacquiao, pregnancy rumors

Sexy actress Krista Ranillo has categorically denied romantic involvement with boxing champ Manny Pacquiao in a chat interview aired on GMA-7’s “24 Oras,” Nov. 18.

“I’m still with Dom,” said Krista, referring to her boyfriend-director Dominic Zapata.

Krista added that she is aware of the issue romantically linking her to Manny but she refused to elaborate for now.

“We’re still discussing when and how we would speak [about the issue],” she said.

In a text message sent to GMA-7, Zapata neither confirmed nor denied that he and Krista are still lovers.

“Suffice it to say that there are non-truths being told. I guess that’s all I’m going to say,” Dominic told GMA News.

The sexy actress also rebuffed rumors that she’s in that interesting stage.

“No dear, I’m not pregnant,” Krista told GMA-7 reporter Nelson Canlas.

At 5 p.m., Nelson was able to talk with Krista’s manager Arnold Vegafria who refused to comment on the matter until he speaks with his ward.

“I’m now in Paris and Krista is now in the United States. But we spoke kanina and we’ve talked about how we’re going to handle all these allegations sa kanya. When I get back, I will hold a presscon to answer all those allegations sa kanya na mga negative,” he told Nelson.

manny pacquaio has said this many times – he will run for public office this coming 2010 election. it will probably for congress in his hometown general santos. pacquaio tried it before but he lost in that election. now that miguel cotto is done and over with and he said his next fight will be in december 2010, it looks like running for public office is next for him.

we believe and we suggest to mannny pacquaio that he abandon this plan of his. we do not question pacquaio’s desire to help the people. in fact we believe him. we think he needs to step back for awhile and he try to answer this question – how can he best serve the filipino people?

we think we already know the answer to that question. pacquaio is actually living the answer the answer to that question – he is helping his countrymen by being who he is, a Filipino boxing champion who is world class, admired by the world and a Filipino who has inspired us all.

we do not think getting elected into a public office can top what he is doing now for the people. we do not think it will add anything. in fact, running for public office and winning it will lessen is impact on the filipino people.

this country has not had someone like manny pacquaio for many years. the last time the country felt proud as a country and a race was cory aquino in 1986. his glory is different from what cory gave us but it leaves very similar feelings and pride.

what should manny do instead, we like to offer a few suggestions:

• open Manny Pacquiao Sports Centers across the country where it will house world-class facilities and equipment for aspiring and deserving athletes can go to to train and practice their skills. we think this should be for all sports but with an emphasis on boxing.
• put up financing that will fund the hiring of world-class trainers and coaches from abroad who will train promising athletes in the country. emphasize boxing but cover all other sports where filipinos can excel in.
• put up a company that will design and manufacture  world-class sports equipment, tools and apparel that will be sold worldwide but given at steep discounts to filipinos in the country. the costs incurred in being in any sport in the country is very high. most of the equipment, tools and apparel that we use here are imported and at very high costs. making them affordable will help filipino sports in general and athletes in particular. it will encourage wider participation.

the proposals we have here does not have to be pacquiao’s alone. with his popularity and pulling power, we are sure he can get sponsors and investors to chip in. the base idea is to use manny’s name as start point and to attract others to help him inn his goal.

also, these ideas are not necessarily a charitable undertaking. these ventures can be set up to break even if not make a profit. either way, any of these ideas can be self-sustaining.

the impact of these efforts are all strategic and for the long term. succeeding in any of these will impact not only the people but the country as well, all on the effort of the man who has inspired us all.

cotto saved bythe bell on 4th round. cotto falls again. pacquiao is dominant and relentless. referree stops the fight at the last round, pacquiao wins.

pacquaio dominated the fight from round one to round 11. towards the last two rounds, all that cotto did was avoid pacquiao, it stopped being a boxing match. cotto knew he was done for and was avoiding a knockout.

in this fight, once again it looked like pacquiao’s opponent was not prepared enough to fight pacquiao. pacquaio is that good that he makes his opponents ill-prepared?

Pacquiao stops Cotto to win 7th title

LAS VEGAS — Manny Pacquiao’s speed and power were way too much for Miguel Cotto’s heart. 

Pacquiao put on yet another dominating performance Saturday night, knocking down Cotto twice and turning his face into a bloody mess before finally stopping him at 55 seconds of the 12th round. The Filipino star used his blazing speed and power from both hands to win his seventh title in seven weight classes and cement his stature as the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world. Cotto took such a beating that his face was a river of red from the fury of Pacquiao’s punches, but he refused to quit even as his corner tried to throw in the towel after the 11th round.

 ”I didn’t know from where the punches were coming,” Cotto said.

 The fight was billed as a 145-pound classic, and in the early rounds it didn’t disappoint. The two went after each other with a vengeance and Cotto more than held his own as they traded punches in the center of the ring before a roaring sellout crowd at the MGM Grand arena.

 Pacquiao dropped Cotto with a right hand early in the third round, but he wasn’t badly hurt and came back to finish the round strong. But after Pacquiao put Cotto on the canvas with a big left hand late in the fourth round, the Puerto Rican was never the same again.

Cotto won two rounds on the scorecards of two ringside judges and just one round on the card of the third. The Associated Press gave Cotto just the first round.

one thing though – they should disband as a group. each of them is  great as individual singers but they don’t really match and certainly do not blend well as a group. it’s either they need to change their musical director or they should forget about singing as a group. they sound very bad when blending. someone is always off and the combined sound  sounds very misplaced.

the national anthem performance was not remarkable. it was just so-so and forgettable. and….someone croaked  at the end of the anthem.

Pacquiao protege Gorres in critical condition after winning Las Vegas fight

Bantamweight boxer Z Gorres, who is part of Manny Pacquiao’s stable at the Wild Card Gym in Hollywood, was in critical condition at a Las Vegas hospital today after collapsing shortly after winning a fight Friday at the House of Blues at Mandalay Bay.

The 27-year-old Filipino was knocked down in the 10th and final round but climbed back to his feet to win a unanimous decision over Colombian Luis Melendez. After the fight, Gorres circled the ring waving a Philippine flag. But as he was preparing to leave the ring, say spectators who were at the fight, Gorres complained that his legs felt weak, then collapsed in his corner.

Gorres (31-2-1) was given oxygen and taken from the arena on a stretcher. He was transported to University Medical Center in Las Vegas, where he underwent surgery to reduce swelling in his brain. Doctors said the boxer will be kept in a coma for several days.
