Ateneo Traffic and Parking Issues

DID YOU KNOW THAT .  .  .

ateneo-grounds

  •  Did you know that over 5,000 vehicles enter and exit Ateneo daily?  This causes problems in vehicle traffic, limited road spaces, and parking.   ( Based on figures from the Ateneo Admin. )
  • Did you know that the open space around Football Field No.1, where tents are set up during events, can easily accommodate 100 to 150 vehicles if parked properly?  ( See the yellow area in photo. )
  • Did you know that the open field beside the Observatory, behind the Lee Irwin Theater, can accommodate about 300 + vehicles for parking?  ( This is based on reliable sources inside Ateneo.  See the blue area in photo. )
  • If Ateneo opens more parking areas and sacrifices a little “non productive” real estate there will be less clogging of vehicles and battling for parking spaces.  Perhaps it can even help ease up traffic along Katipunan Ave. since vehicles of grade school students can then enter smoothly and park properly inside the campus.
  • Did you know that there is a “drivers’ mafia” wherein the drivers connive amongst themselves to block available parking spaces in the open parking areas so that when their “barkada” driver arrives they move their cars to accommodate each other.  Therefore other drivers or parent-driven cars cannot avail of these parking spaces.   ( Based on reliable information from the security guards and actual observations. )
  • Did you know that rude and arrogant parents, drivers, and VIP security are another problem?  We are all equal in Ateneo and must follow simple traffic rules or face heavier penalties.  NO ONE IS ABOVE THE LAW.
  • Have you seen the Grade School driveway turn into triple or quadruple lanes with bumper-to-bumper traffic causing children to walk in between cars to get in or out of their vehicles? Do we need another Amiel Alcantara incident for us to be proactive about these serious issues?  Let us not waste more precious lives.

Parents and Ateneo, please we must unite! Let’s make Ateneo pedestrian-friendly.

We owe it to Amiel.  We owe it to our children!

Let our voices be heard. Please email this to other Ateneo parents and petition Ateneo for immediate action.  Print this page and sign below to signify your concern for the above, then send to Father Kit Bautista, SJ, Headmaster of the Ateneo Grade School.

pustahan tayo… in two weeks tapos na clase… next school year wala pa rin pagbabago… magulo parin…

I have a 3 yrs old son who i want to study in ateneo later. I didnt know before that parking is a real poblem in ateneo. Now that i know, im hesistant/discouraged to let my son study there. I hope that in 3 yrs time (when my son is already 6yrs old and ready for ateneo), the parking issue is already solved. If not, then its “goodbye ateneo”. Sayang mganda pa naman sana school.

IMHO, the problem is not about parking. There are just too many cars belonging to the Ateneo community entering at the same time. If only people learn to take public transport, walk, carpool, etc.

Ateneo is primarily an educational institution and not a mall. Educational institutions need to be pedestrian friendly. “Non productive real estate” can be transformed to mini forests and gardens where the students can hang out and study. There should be more greenery and playing fields, not additional parking lots.

@jecht – there are several schools in the vicinity of SM north. You’ll love SM’s multistory parking lots.

let us deal with the problem …. don’t day dream ..be practical… and realistic… to many cars… lots of non-productive land at the back of lee irwin theater… two large football fields…

plus ..most grade school students don’t hang out after classses… they go straight home… if they need to study… they should study in the library… and not in parks or mini forest…

“educational institution need to be pedestrian friendly” buti kung may route ng jeep papunta sa ateneo….
papaano papasok ang mga bata? ….ang anak mong nasa grade school…pasasakyan mo sa tricycle?owws… talaga?

provide a safe parking area within the ateneo campus… maski pay multi storey pay parking spots sigurado ko kikita sa loob ng ateneo.

My wife and I take turns driving my son to school. Sana I called your bet.

I agree with you it’s a zoo out there. But you should also see how some drivers, bodyguards, and even parents threaten/verbally abuse the guards.

“educational institution need to be pedestrian friendly” buti kung may route ng jeep papunta sa ateneo….
papaano papasok ang mga bata? ….ang anak mong nasa grade school…pasasakyan mo sa tricycle?owws… talaga?” Nope, he does not take the tricycle. He WALKS. When traffic is really bad, we drop him of at the foot of the pedestrian flyover beside National Book Store and he then walks all the way to the grade school. He has a hat and a folding umbrella in his bag BTW. The guards manning the pedestrian lanes have so far been ok. I together with a few dads prefer our sons to be resilient.

@Jonas Most schools are pedestrian campuses as well. Huwag na tayong malalayo, UST has a larger population than Ateneo but they allow very few cars in. The only multilevel parking lot they have is intended for hospital clients. Let’s not even talk about La Salle where most cars are not even allowed in.

I would not mind if ADMU had a branch there. After all the place is historical, But Loyola Heights is also OK for me, problems that need to be solved notwithstanding.

Peace din sa iyo. I know both of us are concerned about the traffic mess here.

stan: “My wife and I take turns DRIVING… my son to school. Sana I called your bet.” … my point… nag contribute ka rin sa traffic congestion sa loob ng campus…. 1 student 1 car ratio… di mo rin pinag commute yun anak mo… see… ganuon natin kamahal ang mga anak natin…

stan: …” I agree with you it’s a zoo out there. But you should also see how some drivers, bodyguards, and even parents threaten/verbally abuse the guards…. thank you… gaya ng sabi ko kids and cars don’t mix…. at ako rin… nakakita ng mga magulang na sobrang tapang… napapailing na lang ako…

stan: Nope, he does not take the tricycle. He WALKS. di ba mas delikado kung ibababa ang mga bata sa labas ng campus… reminds me of the story of an 18 year old taekwando black belt, a scion of a political family who died bec. of a 1.5k peso cell phone…

stan:UST has a larger population than Ateneo but they allow very few cars in. The only multilevel parking lot they have is intended for hospital clients. Let’s not even talk about La Salle where most cars are not even allowed in.

Apples and oranges… AGS population di hamak na mas malaki… prep palang 500 plus na…. multiply that by 7

This is probably a little late, but I couldn’t resist. I’m a college junior in Ateneo, and I’ve probably spent my whole non-Atenean life dropping off and picking up my brothers. I know the Ateneo grounds from the back of my head.

The football field is not a “non-productive area.” I happen to love the open spaces in Ateneo. How many other schools in Metro Manila can boast of grounds like ours? Destroying that for parking space is just not something I’ll ever agree on.

I don’t think making a multi-story parking building will necessarily solve things. Drop off and pick up of students of ANY level can take less than 10 minutes in the campus if traffic was okay. Parking is not an issue if they fix the flow. The simple problem is that there are just too many cars in Ateneo. From the college students and everybody else getting picked up. Why not suggest and heavily promote carpooling instead? Instead of only one kid per car, there can be 4 or more in one, lessening the volume of cars in the campus?

“The football field is not a “non-productive area.” … tama ka…. the non productive area we were referring to is the area beside the observatory behind the lee irwin theater…. at yun ibang area na hindi ginagamit….

while the concept of car pooling is laudable it is not realistic… sa ateneo pa…. ang daming activista na magsasabi na violation daw ito ng human rights kung enforce mo… isipin mo… daming politico… activista dito..

      sana…

Considering the reality of an almost 1 is to 1 student-vehicle ratio during dismissal. One option to decongest traffic is to segregate the pick up traffic of middle school students to other unutilized (during dismissal)parking areas on campus. Regular shuttle service or protected pedestrian routes to the new parking areas should then be provided. This way only schoolbuses and pick up vehicles of prep to grade 3 students will directly utilize the immediate area at the Grade School driveway. A more comprehensive traffic study should be conducted to look at other options.

    Jonas,

Am glad to hear someone agrees with my suggestion. By the way my Gr 4 son who is a classmate of Amiel and another son in Gr 1 both take a schoolbus to and from school.

Do you have the email address of Fr. Nebres? Thanks.

I’m surprised that nobody has mentioned this yet, but there is one little detail being overlooked, a minor detail which could be a contributory factor to the traffic problem, and this is — the students’ huge BAGS.

We live in Loyola Heights, so ideally, we could just park near the Katipunan restaurants and walk up the overpass to get to Ateneo. We could arrive faster by foot, then just walk back and drive home via Esteban Abada. However, my son’s enormous bag makes it impossible to go up and down the overpass! So we end up taking the long route — making two U-turns on Katipunan, and adding to the traffic inside Ateneo — just to transport the BAG!

In the mornings, unloading time takes twice as long, because the drivers first attend to the boys, and then make a second trip to the car to unload the bags from the trunk.

During dismissal time, parents send not only their drivers to fetch the kids, but the yayas too, because while the yaya takes care of the kid, the driver takes care of the bag. And woe to the boy with only one fetcher, because the fetcher is too busy lugging the enormous bag that the boy is often left alone, trailing behind.

You can hardly walk in a straight line through the sea of big blue bags in the covered sidewalk without tripping or being side-swiped. A huge bag is practically the size of one small boy, so just imagine, without these, the corridors would be only half as crowded and so much more navigable.

Why can’t it be “small-bag day” everyday? Do they really have to take all their books home each day of the week? Several LAS papers containing that day’s homework should suffice. What’s so wrong about leaving their books in their lockers, or even under their desks in school overnight? Does anyone steal school books? As long as they’re properly labeled, it should be ok to leave books in school.

An unnecessary volume of books is transported twice a day, back and forth, consuming more GAS, more MANPOWER, and more TIME. Aside from creating solutions to traffic and parking within Ateneo AGS, maybe we should also think outside the box, via a simple physics equation — in that reducing the volume of transportation begins with reducing the amount of mass being transported.

The traffic in Katipunan, specifically in Ateneo and Miriam College areas, is becoming more and more inconvenient for motorists passing along that area. I am very disappointed with Ateneo because they seem not to care for other people using that route (those who will go to pasig, marikina, etc). Can they do something about this?

I noticed that the road going to pasig has 4-5 lanes, while the other side only has 3-4 lanes with U-turn slots. It is annoying to see huge empty parking space near the road area while people suffer from the traffic Ateneo community creates. How inconsiderate. Can Ateneo just give-up that area so that there could be wider space for motorists outside their fence? Or is it really theirs?

Ateneo and Miriam should have drop-off and pick-up points somewhere else for their students in order for Katipunan area to be decongested. It is not fair that many people suffer from the inefficiency and indifference of the mentioned schools.
