steve jobs video on the post-pc era

January 21, 2014 Leave a comment

RANCHO PALOS VERDES, Calif.–At the D8 conference here, Steve Jobs didn’t whip out the newest iPhone or tell us which category will be next to get an “i” before it, but his words offered a glimpse of where the iconic CEO thinks the industry is headed.

Speaking for an hour and a half at the D: All Things Digital confab, Jobs said the day is coming when only one out of every few people will need a traditional computer.

“When we were an agrarian nation, all cars were trucks because that’s what you needed on the farms.” Cars became more popular as cities rose, and things like power steering and automatic transmission became popular.

“PCs are going to be like trucks,” Jobs said. “They are still going to be around.” However, he said, only “one out of x people will need them.”

Jobs said advances in chips and software will allow tablet devices like the iPad to do tasks that today are really only suited for a traditional computer, things like video editing and graphic arts work.

The move, Jobs said, will make many PC veterans uneasy, “because the PC has taken us a long ways.”

“We like to talk about the post-PC era, but when it really starts to happen, it’s uncomfortable,” he said.

Jobs noted that people still laugh at him when he talks about the iPad as magical, and he tried to put that feeling into more concrete terms. “You have a much more direct and intimate relationship with the Internet and media and apps and your content,” Jobs said. “It’s like some intermediate thing has been removed and stripped away. Like that Claritin commercial where they strip away the film–it’s like that.”

Among the other big revelations that came out of the talk was the fact that Apple was actually working on a tablet like the iPad before the iPhone, but put the project on hold when it saw an opportunity to crack the phone market, which is far larger than even the PC business, in terms of units.

early reviews of apple’s iPhone 4 – view list here

here are the links of reviews of the yet to be launched iPhone 4. these are reviews done by a select number of journalists who were given iPhones to test ahead of everyone, they are all glowing reviews.

apple should immediately fire gray powell from his job

April 24, 2010 15 comments

gray powell, the apple engineer who lost the iPhone 4th generation prototype should be fired from his job at apple.

he was totally irresponsible for losing that prototype. he has exposed apple’s trade secrets and the key components of their marketing strategies to competitors before the product was launched.

this is not just a cute media scoop where apple, a most secretive company, was exposed in media not on its own doing and not in its own terms but by “accident”, one committed by one of its engineers.

the effect is that it allowed apple’s competitors the best view ever in a product that apple is still about to be launched. the reason product design templates and concepts are being kept secret is to ensure your competitors do not know these so that they cannot pre-empt your efforts.

one of the most important and most successful strategies in marketing is to be the first in offering something to consumers.  not only do you want to be first, you want to be first to offer the feature or design for as long as you can. competition may eventually catch up or copy the new feature in some way, but getting ahead of them captures core users and puts you ahead of everyone else.

that intent is also one of the reasons why you patent your designs and get copyright on stuff that you make. you do not  want others having the same thing you have labored for.

that is called competitive advantage. apple is famous for competitive advantage and its previous successes  were  largely founded on it. in fact, a lot of it is founded on superior competitive advantage.  apple products succeed not only because they are superior, but equally important they are unique in the market place. there is great value in being the best and being first, a marketing 101.

just look at the app store and itunes. they are mostly unique and it enjoys until now a superior competitive advantage. just imagine  how different it would be for  apple if the itunes and app store ideas were leaked to the press and apples competitors before they were launched.

because apple had competitive advantage and was the first on those two, these have propped apple, its ipod and iphone businesses to success, translating to huge revenues and even bigger profits.

look no further, the iphone, exactly the prototype that powell lost in that california bar is probably the best example of what secrecy and competitive advantage gives a brand.

a big part of the magic of the iphone to consumers was it’s uniqueness in the market place. that uniqueness was founded on the fact that apple’s competitors did not have a product quite like it.

apple products are known for their superior design and ability to satisfy consumer needs and wants with both almost always being the first to do so in a most effective way. getting the prototype out enabled it’s competitors to remove the advantage.

one of the unique features of the iphone 4G that we now know is a second camera at the face of  the handset. no other mobile handset has that feature. with apple’s competitors knowing this now, how many of them are now designing new models with the same feature? would they have thought of it if we did not know about it when powell misplaced the prototype handset? or of they already had plans for it, knowing that apple will have it soon is good reason for them to speed up their own plans on having the same feature in their upcoming new handsets.

the prototype was lost on march 28 but we read about the loss only recently. that is a very long time for a prototype to be studied and figured out by engineers. there must be in someone’s computer a list of new design elements and new features of the yet to be released iphone 4G.

there are 2 key components in any electronic product – its  physical components and software. the physical components gives you more than half of the features of the electronic gear. it can tell you capabilities, features and performance.  gizmodo did take the prototype apart. they now know everything that the iphone 4G can do.

the loss of the iphone prototype and the subsequent release of its features to its competitors has a very direct impact on the business of apple. apple should respond accordingly by firing  powell from his job for risking the iphone business, a core business for the company.

can powell ever be trusted again in apple? we do not think so. his peers and supervisors at apple would not be able to trust him again. it will also be foolish for apple to trust him again with anything.

powell put at risk 40% of apple’s total revenues as the iphone now accounts for that much based on apple’s 2nd quarter financial release announced recently. in other words, powell had in his hand a substantial slice of the business of the company that paid powell’s salary. he had in his hands at least 40% of apple’s future business whose trade secrets may now very well be in the hands of apple’s competitors.

we think it is the duty of apple to it’s stockholders and employees to fire powell from his job. in fact we think powell should be held criminally liable for the potential loss of business for apple.

anyone who owns an AAPL stock should complain to apple and demand that they fire powell from his job. powell put investments on AAPL at high risk.

(disclosure: we are a long term holder of AAPL stocks)

the apple tablet – success to be driven by product strategy

January 27, 2010 Leave a comment

the apple tablet is upon us, literally in a few minutes’ time. the frenzy has not died down and we should expect it to go into super hyper drive within the next few days.

the apple tablet’s success will be hinged on one thing – what is the product strategy they are adapting for the tablet? product strategy is design and technology design but it goes beyond to the physical and technology heart of the product, at its core is what market does it intend to conquer and what consumer need it intends to tap into, actually, for apple the question is what consumer need it intends to create.

we think apple has two options which may at face value look similar but at it’s core and implication a most fundamental question.

  • is the apple tablet a bigger version of the iphone/ipod touch?
  • or is the apple tablet a smaller version of the macbook?

for sure, there will be common features and design for both strategic options,  but the direction it takes is very much different in taking one over the other. the build-up of further functions and use will be very different depending on where it starts.

for consumers, the attitude and preferences are clearly and often separate in definition. we do not think any one product can satisfy both needs to the fullest. besides from a marketing standpoint, it is not wise to have such a product. it will be too confusing and too complicated for the consumer to appreciate.

there is a third option. it is something apple has done a few times during our lifetime – define a completely different and completely new product to create a completely new and different market.

we will come back to this point of view after we get to know what is the apple tablet.

first iPhone worm hits jailbroken units

November 9, 2009 Leave a comment

the worm is playful, not harmful but a sure hit for its developer, ikex. all it does is put up rick astley’s photo as a wallpaper on the iphone. but that is a consolation for now as this can mean the start of more things to come.

i think the age old question is it wise to have you iphone jailbroken has been answered today.

First-known iPhone worm ‘Rickrolls’ jailbroken Apple handsets

The iPhone’s first worm — a playful, wallpaper-changing prank that only affects jailbroken phones — could be a sign of more dangerous things to come.

A hacker who identifies himself as “ikex” created the worm, which changes the user’s wallpaper to a picture of 1980s pop star Rick Astley, who sang the 1987 hit “Never Gonna Give You Up.” The software includes the message: “ikee is never gonna give you up.”

The term jailbreaking refers to a hack that allows users to run software not approved by Apple on the iPhone. It can grant users the ability to install custom wallpapers and themes, enable tethering, or unlock the handset for use on a non-approved carrier.

The ikex worm is simply a prank known as “Rickrolling,” an Internet bait-and-switch meme when users expect to see a video on a certain topic, only to find themselves watching Astley’s cheesy 1987 music video. According to Forbes, the worm does nothing malicious.

“The world’s first iPhone worm is also hardly a true criminal exploit,” the report said. “Instead, it seems to be half warning, half prank. Ikee’s author, who identifies himself or herself as ‘ikex’ in the worm’s source code, also wrote in the code that “People are stupid, and this is to prove it so,” adding that users should read their phones’ manuals.”

For now, the worm is said to be spreading among jailbroken iPhones in Australia. It affects only users who did not change their default SSH password, which allows file transfers between phones.

“It’s not that hard, guys,” ikex wrote in the source code. “But hey who cares its only your bank details at stake.”

how much is the brilliant business model Apple App Store worth?

March 19, 2009 Leave a comment

app_storedo you have $72,000.00 to spare? if you do you can own all the 25,000 applicati0ns sold at Apple’s App Store. yup, the apps are that cheap.

but that is not the big story yet. apple’s app store is a run-away business model success for apple. it has added profits to the company.

but that is not even the true worth of the app store – it is much more worth than its current revenues when it is able to able to satisfy apple customers.

apple continues to bite mocrosoft vista, says in it’s ad “DON’T GIVE UP ON VISTA”

November 10, 2008 Leave a comment

macad“Don’t give up on Vista” – yes, those words are on an apple ad selling macs.

it’s not meant to sell vista, in fact the intent is the opposite. apple continue to take bites off vista’s product failures and actual very bad consumer experience on vista.

this kind of competitive advertising is every adman’s dream – you’re competition has an inferior product and you have a lot of funds to exploit the situation.
